Job Summary

The Medical Strategy Lead is senior medical & scientific expert for the TA/ assets providing senior medical leadership on the therapeutic area (TA) strategy and medical & scientific subject matter expertise for the TA (eg: dermatology, rheumatology, epilepsy, rare diseases) – in alignment with the xPVU strategy set at Global and regional level.
He/ She is primarily responsible for setting the overall medical strategy for the TA at the country level as input into the cross-functional strategy, by translating science into value for patients and business; provides medical strategic direction to the TA Medical Affairs Teams enabling successful execution of the medical components of the local patient value brand plans (PVBP).
The Medical Strategy Lead provides strategic and scientific subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders (TA cross-functional leaders and teams, within medical & across the organization) and engages externally with relevant key stakeholders to deliver the value story, scientific exchange and to seize & drive key initiatives.

Major Accountabilities

Key accountabilities areas are:
• Medical strategy development for an asset and medical input into strategic plans and patient value brand plans (PVBP)
•Scientific and medical subject matter expertise ensuring high level of scientific & TA acumen across the organization
•Drives scientific engagement and evidence generation/publication with selected relevant key external stakeholders
Core job responsibilities of the TA medical Strategic lead are inclusive of the following:
Medical Strategy
• Delivers the medical TA strategy as part of the cross-functional strategy, by translating science into value for patients and business, in collaboration with the cross functional team and aligned with the global/regional strategy;
• Provides medical input to the TA cross-functional team/ unit, Market Access and External Engagement to ensure the successful integration of critical medically focused deliverables for existing products and launches of new products.
•Anticipates and identifies areas of strategic interest within the country care management system and addresses those through the medical component of the local PVBP/ Medical Affairs Plan and key medical deliverables (evidence generation plans & study concepts, medical stakeholders’ engagement, scientific communication and quality of care initiatives).
• Drives the pre-launch medical strategy & execution for new assets and coordinates local / area input and contribution into the asset clinical programs
• Represents the expert medical viewpoint and insights based on local input into the regional/ global strategy and works with the regional/global teams to generate strategy and plans meaningful for countries; including evidence generation for which will articulate the country specific needs, include in the regional & global evidence generation plans and collaborate with clinical development for execution.
Scientific and medical expertise to internal teams ensuring high level of scientific & TA acumen across the organization, particularly to the medical teams; champions medical excellence
• Education and training: develop the concept of medical training programs to ensure that TA medical teams, cross functional teams and key internal stakeholders have appropriate levels of expertise in relevant disease states and with relevant products, in line with UCB standards of scientific leadership
• Key responsibility for medical & scientific guidance for medical teams, especially for the Field Medical Lead & MSLs
•Key responsibility for evidence generation and publications in collaboration with the global counterparts
•Role models high ethical and compliance standards to the associates within the TAs and contributes proactively to a credible image for UCB Medical Affairs for external and internal stakeholders
• Ensures compliance with the UCB standards and local regulations (regulatory, pharma codes, etc) for all medical affairs deliverables in the TA team, directly and in collaboration with the Country Medical Lead (medical plans, medical events, material clearance and external funding as appropriate (grants, donation, sponsorships, IIS)). Provides scientific input into cross-functional and promotional projects to ensure highest scientific standard and foster compliance.
•Works closely with the regional/ global medical teams to contribute to maintaining a high standard of scientific knowledge in the TA, providing local insights into the trends & needs in the care management in the TA and equally to contribute to the medical capability excellence with his/her local experience
Drives scientific engagement with selected relevant external stakeholders
•Fosters authentic peer scientific/medical engagement with national/ international top experts, professional societies, medical roles at payers and patient advocacy groups that require high level of expertise, experience and for complex collaboration projects
•Champions scientific leadership of our data and fosters recognition of the innovative and differentiated science of our solutions
•Seizes and fosters collaborations aligned with TA objectives and supporting external stakeholders to drive patient value
•Anticipates changes in HC environment and collects disease area insights, driving strategic use of insights and medical actions
•Identifies data education and quality of care gaps and validates in partnership with key external experts to enable development of solutions, initiatives in therapeutic areas to address these gaps and improve patient care

Experience
• Substantial Medical Affairs experience within the pharmaceutical industry, (5-8+ years in senior position) in the respective therapeutic areas or similar experience
• Strong understanding of clinical development and study management, as well as real world evidence generation plans and practices
• Track record of contribution to / medical/ clinical development strategies
• Track record of leading cross-business/cross-functional planning, collaborating and solution building
• Solid peer relationships with and exposure to external scientific/ clinical experts, professional & regulatory bodies, pharma associations; demonstrated ability to proactively engage internal and external leaders and serve as a medical expert
• Solid knowledge of the country pharma, environment and healthcare ecosystems and relevance for the business
• Demonstrated experience of governance activities and their pragmatic implementation
